A wrought iron fence or railing is—as the name suggests—made by forging. The wrought iron process begins with the production of steel, which is then forged into the desired shapes and sizes. Wrought iron impresses with its properties of maximum stability and weather resistance.
There are basically six steps to producing forged parts:
1. Design: What should the fence or railing look like? The first step in making a wrought iron fence or railing is the design. A detailed design must be created beforehand, containing the exact dimensions, patterns, and ornaments required for the final product.
2. Preparation of Materials and Equipment Once the design is finalized, the materials are prepared. This includes sourcing the steel, preparing patterns and molds, and preparing tools and equipment.
3. Heating in the Furnace In the next step, the steel is heated to a high temperature in a forge to make it malleable. Wrought iron is typically heated to a temperature between 1200 and 1300 degrees Celsius. This range is called the forging temperature and is necessary to bring the material into a malleable state, allowing it to be forged and shaped.
4. Forging: The steel is formed Once the steel is heated to the required temperature, the blacksmith begins to shape it. This can be done by hammering, pressing, or punching.
5. Welding:Individual parts become a whole After the shaping is complete, the individual forged parts are put together and then welded to form the fence element or railing.
6. Finishing: Powder coating, galvanizing, or patina The finished fence or railing element is then finished with a coating that provides protection against the elements and enhances its appearance. Anthracite powder coating is one of the most popular coating options. A galvanized forged part impresses with a silvery matte appearance; patina, on the other hand, has a romantic character.
Now the wrought iron fence or railing is finished and ready for installation.
